HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The Horry County Planning Commission voted Thursday night to move forward with the plans for The District at the Myrtle Beach Mall.

The plans for changes would include new waterfront restaurants, sports bars, additional shopping areas, clubs, and a boutique hotel.

DDC Engineering is overseeing the project which is described as a hybrid mall, similar to The Market Common and the Tanger Outlets, and they believe the economic impact it’ll make on the community will be significant.

The sales tax benefits of that mall has dropped by about 80% from its peak so just getting it back to where it was will be a great boom for the county and the state,

The project will also include expanding the Bass Pro Shop by up to 45%, adding a rock wall and a bow shooting area.

The CEO of King One Properties Michael King in November who said the Myrtle Beach Mall, located right next to S.C. 22, Highway 17 and the Intracoastal Waterway is a prime location for redevelopment, which could soon become a reality.

It will help the entire community as a whole, not only bringing new jobs to the area but also increase our tax base which helps us all,

Mike Wooten, an engineer from DDC Engineering, told WMBF News on Thursday that the company is planning to expand Bass Pro Shop by 35 to 45 percent and will be adding rock climbing and other activities to appeal to not only tourists but locals too.

Wooten also said it will be a hybrid mall and will cost around $140 to $150 million and is a significant undertaking for the company and the community.
I was happy by the fact the planning commission understands what this means for that region and to see this mall be revitalized. I was tickled to death and the vote and am very happy that we had no opposition, Wooten said.

Wooten said the plan will enable them to turn the mall inside out, making shopping more of an outside experience.
If you were to ask someone from planning and zoning what’s the best thing to do with an old mall, they’re doing it, Neeves said.

He added that he hopes that as the plans begin to unfold, more businesses pop up along the waterway.

What I would hope to see is some entrepreneurs put in a water taxi so people can go from club to club and stay out of their cars, said Wooten.

When Wooten was asked about a timeline for this project if council votes to move forward with the plans he said it could be quite sometime up to nine months before physical changes at the location begin.

The proposed plans will move forward to the Horry County Council on February 9.
